Academic Support Program
- The Academic Support Program strives to meet the needs and contribute to the academic success of SMCC students with various learning styles, including students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, autism spectrum disorder, generalized anxiety disorders, emotional and health impairments, and other types of academic needs.
- Program support staff includes a licensed school social worker with experience in special education, a veteran school social worker, and a veteran mathematics/science educator.
- Students who are eligible for accommodations are approved through an “accommodations plan.” This plan is similar to a 504 but less comprehensive than an individualized education program (I.E.P.).
- Students are provided services such as Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention, small group instruction, quiet testing environments, differentiated instruction, scaffolding, read-aloud testing, and extended testing time.
- The Director of Academic Support functions as a case manager for students with accommodations, serving as the liaison between parents and faculty.
- Students and their parents work directly with the Director of Academic Support to tailor a plan to meet each student’s individual needs.
- The Director of Academic Support confers with administration, college advisers, faculty, and families to create a plan of success for each student that will allow for him/her to achieve success in the classroom, have a positive experience at SMCC, and graduate with a high school diploma based on our college preparatory curriculum.
- The program offers peer-tutoring assistance, in which students can complete homework and prepare for tests with members of the National Honor Society both before and after school.
- The program provides the opportunity for students to be placed in a "structured study hall." During structured study hall, students can work independently, in small groups, or with a staff member or trained professional to receive hands-on support with their academic coursework, test-taking strategies, organizational and study skills, and monitoring of assignments.
- The program supplies a quiet test-taking environment for students who may struggle with distractions or test anxiety.
- The Director of Academic Support assists students with the registration process for the taking the ACT or SAT with accommodations and also provides in-person, 1-on-1 ACT test proctoring services.
- The program boasts an extremely high retention rate. Students in this program have achieved being on the Honor Roll and have graduated with honors as well.
